Tim Duncan Won Titles in 1999 and 2014 With the Same Team
Tim Duncan won five championships spread across three decades, from 1999 to 2014, all with San Antonio. He was named to 15 All-Defensive teams, won two MVP awards and three Finals MVPs, and never played for another franchise.
Nineteen seasons, one team, more than 1,000 wins, which only two other players have managed with a single franchise. The Spurs were a title contender in his rookie year and a title winner in his seventeenth. Coaches, teammates, rules and eras all turned over around him; the constant was a power forward using a bank shot and correct footwork.
The fifteen All-Defensive selections are the underrated line. Great scorers are common and great defenders are common; players who anchor an elite defense for nearly two decades while also being the first option on offense are not. San Antonio built its identity on a defense that could be relied upon in May, and that defense was a man protecting the rim and organizing everyone in front of him.
What makes the case unusual is how little of it depends on spectacle. There is no signature dunk, no scoring title, no season where he took over the league. There is instead a nineteen-year stretch in which his team won at least fifty games in every full season and never once rebuilt. Sustained excellence is harder to televise than a peak, and it is worth more.
Karl Malone scored 36,928 points, second only to Abdul-Jabbar when he retired, and was the more physically imposing player across a comparable career. He also never won a title. Dirk Nowitzki changed what a seven-footer could be and beat a stacked Miami team almost single-handedly in 2011. Giannis Antetokounmpo has two MVPs, a Finals MVP and a higher athletic peak than any of them.
Malone has the scoring and Nowitzki has the more remarkable single run. Duncan has five rings, three Finals MVPs and the longest sustained run of excellence any big man has managed.
